Our first day in Portugal brought us to Coimbra, which is the home of the oldest university in Portugal.  We rode a bus from Salamanca to Coimbra and got to see what Portugal looked like.  Much greener than Spain.  I guess it's the influence of the Atlantic.

Our first welcome to Portugal.  Kinda meager, huh?

As you can see from one of the last photos from the shuttle Columbia, Portugal is much greener than Spain.  That's the onset of nightfall and you can see the lights coming on in much of Europe.

They were having major problems with forest fires while we were there.  This was a really hot one that we passed on the bus.  They were dropping water on the hot spots using a helicopter.

A view of a plaza in town.  Everywhere apartments.  The main shopping street is just behind those buildings.

A view from across the river back toward town.  The university is up there on top of the hill.

Looking back to the North from across the river.

A view of the botanical gardens along the riverside.

A beautiful old church with a fountain in front of it.  This was in the heart of town.

This is a view of the town taken from high up on the hill.

The marketplace where many people buy their groceries.  Those are the fish sellers down there.

The plaza down by the river.  That street you see going up in front of the yellow building is the main shopping street.  Lots of nice shops along the street, which is closed to vehicular traffic.

Not everyone is so modern.  This lady is carrying laundry on her head.

The bank located on the major plaza.

An amusement park for kids.  It's called Little Portugal.  Pretty cheesy.

Speaking of cheesy.  Look at this rolling billboard for a furniture store.

The next morning we got up and went to the University.  click here to see it.
