The Neuhaus Center houses three strategic programs in: undergraduate teaching, for students interested in pursuing a minor in entrepreneurship studies; basic and applied research, with an emphasis on entrepreneurial development; and in community service that provides support to the local business community and local K-12 teachers. In the latter program, the goal is to significantly increase the level of economic literacy among local K-12 students. This objective is achieved by improving the teaching skills of their economics teachers with the support of the Texas Council on Economic Education. The specific program elements are, Basic and Applied Research- Primary emphasis of both basic and applied research is on the dynamics of small business activity in the Rio Grande Valley area and in the relationship of this sort of activity with the economic development of the region. Working Paper Series Undergraduate Teaching- This program is targeted toward students interested in starting and successfully operating a small business upon graduation. Thus, emphasis is on understanding small business operations in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Community Service- The community service aspect comprises the development of programs that provide training for the local K-12 teachers as well as programs that provide support for the local community. Teacher-Training Programs- Provide K-12 teachers with instruction on basic economic concepts in a highly interactive way. The program offers, first, the possibility of pursuing a graduate degree in economics education with a focus on entrepreneurship. Second, the program provides a series of seminars that focus on current economic issues to encourage teacher participation and discussion. Finally, the program offers various economics education workshops that provide teachers with hands-on experience that they can almost immediately apply in the classroom.
