Since April 1998, the Neuhaus Center has organized seminars for nearly 300 teachers throughout the Valley, including locations in Edinburg, Brownsville and Laredo. The seminars are designed for teachers K-12. As part of the program, the Neuhaus Center supplies materials that facilitate in-class instruction of economic concepts. Virtual Economics CD-ROM -Produced by the National Council of Economic Education, this CD-ROM is a state-of the-art economics teaching resource for grades K through 12. The CD-ROM contains links to teaching strategies, curriculum materials, economic data, concept definitions, student handouts, tests, lesson plans, and more. The CD-ROM contains valuable information related to the TEKS objectives. Thus, the Virtual Economics CD-ROM can be an important aid in preparation for TAAS. Resource Materials -In addition to the CD-ROM, teachers receive resource materials targeted for the specific grade levels they teach. Developed by the National Council on Economic Education, these materials aim to enhance learning in disciplines such as history, geography, civics, and personal finance. Financial Fitness For Life-This workshop created by the National Council on Economic Education offers principles of personal finance for students ages K-12. The material is broken up in grade levels: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12. Along with teacher training manuals are student workbooks and parent guides. The Neuhaus Center has just completed the translation into Spanish of the parent guide levels K-2 and 3-5. Mini-Society-created by Dr. Marilyn Kourilsky and sponsored by the Kauffman Foundation, Mini-Society implements economics and entrepreneurship principles into the classroom by providing students with hands-on activities. The program is sponsored during the summer by the Neuhaus Center, and it entails three days of training for teachers.
